Are you concerned about adult onset diabetes symptoms?

Diabetics are unable to produce proper amounts of insulin. Insulin helps the body burn sugar as energy. Type one diabetics cannot produce any insulin. However, people with diabetes will not produce that extra insulin, resulting in continued high glucose levels. This will help your doctor diagnose whether or not you have diabetes.

People with adult onset diabetes’s should first try to control their blood glucose level by watching what they eat. A nutritionist will help you balance your carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates are a source of glucose, and include grains, dairy products, fruits and vegetables. Diabetics can still eat sweets, but must eat them with a balanced meal to ensure their blood glucose level does not spike. Exercise also helps burn glucose. Diabetes research has found that even losing ten pounds can make a difference in blood glucose levels.

Diabetics will need to use a blood glucose meter to monitor their blood glucose level. A testing kit will include a lance and lancet to prick your skin to produce a drop of blood. The blood is placed on a test strip, and inserted for the meter to analyze your blood glucose level.

Blood glucose levels can vary throughout the day. Generally, they are lowest when you wake up in the morning, and highest within a few hours of eating. You will need to monitor your blood glucose level several times every day to ensure you are maintaining your target range.

Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar. This can happen if you take too much insulin, or do not eat soon enough after taking it. You can also get hypoglycemia if you get more exercise than normal. Hypoglycemia reactions can range from mild to severe. It can lead to symptoms ranging from sudden hunger, nervousness and a pounding heartbeat, to passing out, confusion, lack of co-ordination and passing out.

Good diabetes control can ensure diabetics live a long and happy life. Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death, and affects up to 20 per cent of the population in the developed world. Although there is no cure,insulin and lifestyle changes can help you manager your blood glucose level effectively. Adult onset diabetes requires careful control, but doesn’t have to slow you down.
