The treatment for diabetes is ever changing. Modern medicine and technology has made things easier, and helpful in the treatment, and test of blood glucose levels of diabetic people, or how they get insulin their bodies. Not long ago the diabetic people were forced to poke themselves with needles and inject themselves with syringes, or pens, several times a day, with no alternative solution.

The diabetes insulin pump is a newer medical device for diabetic people who need insulin; This device is used to administer doses of insulin into the blood stream. It’s an alternative to multiple daily injections of insulin through the use of a syringe, or an insulin pen. The insulin pump is a more intensive form of insulin therapy. The person monitors their blood glucose level and carbohydrate intake, and the pump is programmed to fit their insulin needs.

The insulin pump had a few different components. The pump itself, and batteries are needed, a reservoir that holds the insulin, that is disposable when the insulin is gone, an infusion set including the tubing needed to administer the insulin under the skin, which is also disposable, a cannula ( a tube that’s inserted in the body), and a control panel for regulating amounts of insulin.

The insulin pump is designed to deliver fast acting insulin in two ways. One is to immediately react to the blood glucose level in the blood stream from foods just consumed. This is called the bolus dosage. The second way is to keep the blood glucose level in between meals and while sleeping, by a continuous adjustable rate of insulin. This is called the Basil dosage These two dosages work in conjunction, and give the person intensive insulin therapy.

There are many positive reason and advantages of an insulin pump, over the use of the traditional way of injecting insulin several times a day. The basil injection which controls your insulin for hours at a time, gives the person more freedom with the foods they eat. Normally they would have to follow a very structured meal, but with the insulin pump, they can eat more freely, since the insulin is accurately controlling their blood sugar level. Most insulin pump users say that the pump is more discreet and even more discreet the old fashioned needles. Insulin pumps deliver a far more precise amount of insulin, then needles, which in turn will cause fewer errors, and less possible complications due to the inaccurate amount glucose in the blood stream… The most modern insulin pumps even have a smart chip that even regulates and records its own blood sugar level and adjusts accordingly. The main advantage is the pump is just a lot more accurate then the injection method.

Everything seems to have advantages, and also disadvantages. The insulin pump is no different… The main disadvantage is the cost. The insulin pump is much more expensive. The supplies that are needed such as batteries, insulin cartridges, and infusion sets, are far more expensive then the insulin syringe method. There is always a possibility of pump failure, so the person is forced to have syringes for back up and wait till the pump is repaired. Some people using the pump find it uncomfortable and they sometimes can do things like play sports, because it has to worn on the body, most of time.
