There are 21 million diagnosed diabetics in the United States alone. This doesn’t include people with pre diabetes, or ones with diabetic symptoms, and has not been officially diagnosed, a diabetic. This adds up to a lot or people who depend on their diabetes prescription medication, primarily, insulin.

Information coming from the pharmaceutical companies, show a major increase for insulin for children ages 5-19 years of age. This number has doubled from the year 2002, to 2005. This is a huge increase of juvenile diabetes type 2. Doctors expected a spike in the numbers because of the increase in child obesity. but they never saw the numbers to rise this much, The major increase in prescription diabetes medication was the ages of 10-14, rising 106 percent. The demand for diabetes medication in just children is stagnant and it’s very uncommon for any drug demand to double in just 4 years. The only exception is if a new drug is introduced and is very affective. Erectile dysfunction drugs are a prime example of a rapid demand for a new drug, that’s proven affective. Diabetes medication is basically just insulin, and nothing has changed except the massive demand for the medication. If anything the number of diabetes prescription date underestimates the actual cases of diabetes type 2 in children because the disease is goes often undiagnosed for 5-10 years… many prescriptions are often written but not filled either.

It appears we are losing the war on diabetes. This sometimes makes people take a step back and rethink things. Diabetes is the 3rd cause of death in the United States. Diabetes prescriptions do not cure the problem it just alleviates the symptoms, and more people are getting diagnosed with diabetes type 2. diabetic prescription drugs not only don’t cure the problem, they also come with many side affects for some people. Allergic reactions, injection reactions to the skin, nausea, vomiting, headache, backache, sinus issues, diarrhea, viral infections, and anemia, have all been directly caused by diabetic medication.

The sad fact is that all the diabetic prescriptions in the world will not cure the disease; All the drugs does is delay the inevitable. Complications of diabetes, includes blindness, heart disease, kidney failure loss of limbs because amputation is necessary, nerve damage, and eventually death.

Until diabetes can be cured, diabetic prescriptions will be necessary, and according to statistics, will keep growing. The big question is how to stop or how to prevent diabetes from ever showing its ugly face. Many believe it because of society’s lifestyles that caused the increase. Some believe a healthy lifestyle, with lots of exercise, eating the proper foods, and not over eating will prevent diabetes type 2, therefore the need for prescription medication will decline. There is evidence that living a better live, eating better, sleeping properly, and exercising, does curb diabetes, but there is still no proof that this is the total answer. Many people who have lived a healthy lifestyle still have developed diabetes type 2.

Another alarming fact is the cost of prescription diabetic medication has nearly doubled in 6 years, rising 73 percent, due to the demand, and the production cost of the medication. The cases of diabetes type2 are the major reason for the spike in the cost of insulin, and other diabetic supplies. Until there is a cure for this disease, it’s apparent that these numbers will continue to rise.
