Diabetes is all about getting insulin to convert to glucose in the blood stream. If you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, then the problem you have may not be that simple to solve. Since there is no insulin being produced by the body, then insulin has top be rejected. This happens every day so therefore it has to be done at home. Therefore we require insulin. In order for the insulin to be injected into the body you will need to have syringes in order to get the work done. Insulin and syringes would therefore be the most important part of a diabetic supplies kit. After the insulin has been given, it is very necessary to check whether the correct number of units have to be increased or lowered. The only way to do this would require you to test your blood sugar levels both in the morning and 2 hours after eating your lunch.
The instrument that you would use to measure your glucose blood sugar levels is called a glucose meter. This is a very important diabetic supply. In order for the glucose meter to read and record a level, some of your blood is required. An instrument that comes most often in the shape of a pen and is used to prick the finger to draw blood is called a lancet. The blood is taken on what is called a testing strip. In a few seconds the glucose meter begins to flash the resulting level. Remember that before the finger is pricked to get the blood to flow, it should be cleaned with alcohol and then wiped with a cotton ball or swab. A good supply of alcohol and cotton swabs should be on hand at all times. To test to make sure that the meter is functioning properly, you should have what is commonly known as a control solution that is used on a test strip to obtain a result that fall within a specific range.
Sometimes instead of using syringes, and insulin pump is used. The pump gives insulin directly but the disadvantage is that the amount of insulin inhaled may be either more or less then what is needed.
The insulin bottles are usually provided with caps to help the syringe to be directed correctly. Regularly, each set has 2 caps. The other supplies such as insulin, syringes, lancets and test strips, all are packaged in one convenient carrying case. Also part of your diabetic supply kit, would be urinalysis strips for testing urine.
Glucose tablets, which are used to help raise sugar levels, should also be kept on hand and given if the person is suffering from hypoglycemia. These are to be considered a staple in you diabetic supply kit. A peripheral neuropathy device is also another part of your kit. This is used to test as to whether there is reduced sensation in the nerve fibres.
Diabetic patients should use proper socks and shoes to help prevent ulcers, blisters, and calluses. The socks are usually made from a special fibre which does not have any friction. This special fibre helps to stop bacteria growth. Shoes, like socks, serve the same purpose since diabetics are prone to foot infections. Therefore the shoes should be extra wide and extra deep.
