Diabetic symptoms are not always easy to identify and are often ignored or excused away by being overtired, having a bug. Symptoms often develop gradually over a period of time which also makes them hard to identify as diabetes symptoms. Things to watch for though when looking for symptoms or signs of diabetes are things like fatigue, sick or unexplained squeamish feeling, the need to urinate frequently especially through the night as well as one of the more common…seemingly unquenchable thirst. The body’s way of dealing with excess glucose in the blood is to void it through urination which causes the thirst and need for more liquids.

In dealing with diabetes there are also other signs to look for including unexpected weight drop. Vision and sight problems, slow healing skin, urinary or gum infections and often in females genital itching.

Once a doctor has been consulted he may also suspect his patient may have diabetes and send for further testing if the person has other health issues or diseases related to diabetes. A few good examples of this are heart disease, vision change or impairment, numbness, soreness in limbs, and slow healing sores. Any one or even a few of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have diabetes but they do indicate that further testing is required and your Physician should order blood work and testing.

So, to recap, on the classic symptoms of diabetes the things to watch for are:frequent urination excessive thirst-polydpsia hunger-polyphagia weight loss.

We should also keep in mind these other symptoms as well:fatigue blurred vision dry mouth male impotence odd aches and pains female vaginal infections (yeast) slow healing of cuts or sores unusual or excessive infections.

Although the above listed symptoms are quite common in diabetics not everyone will be affected the same in fact some may not appear to have any signs of the disease at all.

In a recent report by noted medical journalist Rhonda Rowland for CNN, she stated that of the estimated 16 million people in the United States about half were unaware of having it. In order to improve this, the medical community now recommends that all adults over 45 should be periodically tested for diabetes. It was also recommended that they should be tested every three years after that even if diabetes is not suspected.
