Diabetics or people providing food for diabetics should avoid using foods that may be high in sugar, honey and even artificial sweeteners. An alternative such as stevia should be used where possible in place of artificial sweeteners. Sweets and most chocolates are high in sugar content and should be avoided but if we are going to indulge in the occasional piece of chocolate we should use Continental dark chocolate. This is often available with at least 75% cocoa solids. Other foods to avoid include beans, parsnips, carrots and peas which all are super high in starch. Fruits such as bananas, grapes, strawberries and mangoes are not preferred for diabetic diets but fruits such as grapefruit, peaches, limes and apples are okay as long as eaten gradually throughout the day to avoid sudden rises in blood glucose levels. Seafood of all types if boiled, steamed or grilled are also good. All fibre foods such as cereals, nuts, fruits and seeds are wise choices of snacks for diabetics. Lamb and beef should be limited to twice a week and white meats such as chicken, fish and duck is preferred. Diabetics can have eggs but preferably keep the yolk content to a minimum. Cheeses are fine with the exception of cottage cheese.
