What is commonly referred to as an insulin pump is a medical delivery device used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and usually in type type 1. Another name for an insulin pump is subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy. The pump is used as an alternative to multiple daily insulin injections by syringe or insulin pens.
The Insulin pump itself consists of:The pump complete with controls, batteries and processing module A reservoir inside the pump to hold the insulin An infusion set (disposable) and cannula. These are used to make subcutaneous insertions (below skin), and a tube system that interfaces the insulin reservoir to the cannula.
