When converting sugar, starches and other foods we digest into the energy we require to live; there is a hormone produced by our bodies called insulin. When our bodies will not or can not create this hormone properly diabetes results and our doctors may put us on an insulin treatment.
Some facts about insulin:no one can survive without insulin type 2 diabetes patients may create insulin but it is not used by the body properly and may need insulin injections to control glucose type 1 diabetes do not create or create very small amounts of insulin in their bodies and so need daily doses of insulin to survive insulin can only be administered by injection or an insulin pump if requiring insulin it is usually twice a day or more and can often be more than one type of insulin.
Types of Insulin:Short-acting insulin is prescribed to encourage the body to better use the glucose in the foods we digest this often taken before each meal Long-acting insulin keeps blood glucose levels in the preferred target range between meals and throughout the night Pre-mixed insulin is a combination of the short and long acting insulin that although is more convenient will not work in all cases.
Daily blood glucose monitoring should be a regular part of a diabetic’s lifestyle. It is a way to see how your activities and diet are affecting your blood glucose. By using your monitor and keeping a log of things like food choices, insulin doses and stress and relaxation you can get a picture of what works and doesn’t work for you.
It is also important that every three to four months it is important to glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C) tested.
