The first stage of preparing an insulin pump for use is to ensure that the reservoir is filled with the prescribed insulin. Although some may have pre-filled cartridges others will have to be filled manually. Some types of insulin used in the pumps include Apidra, Humalog and Novolog. The steps for preparation include:1. opening a sterile empty pump reservoir2. pulling back the plunger3. inserting needle into insulin vial4. ensuring no air in the reservoir that may prevent a vacuum forming in vial as insulin is withdrawn5. drawing insulin into the insulin reservoir and removing needle6. ejecting any air bubbles in the reservoir7. hooking or attaching reservoir to the infusion set tubing8. putting the assembly into the pump, then priming the tubing by pushing insulin and any air bubbles through tube while still disconnected from body9. attaching the pump to the site of infusion.
