Individuals receiving the diagnosis of diabetes is a shock to the system as it is usually the furthest guess from their mind. It is also a time to reflect and decide with the assistance of the family medical physician, what is the next step. Sometimes it will take a few days for the individual to digest the diabetes diagnosis. Deciding how to proceed from this point and what medication, if any, is necessary will come next. The medical physicians do understand this and they will allow the new patient time to try to understand what is happening with the individual’s body.

Family medical physicians in the meantime will prepare for the next meeting with the individual and try to work out a plan. This plan will consist with the diabetes tests and try to figure out the proper diet and exercise for the individual to entertain. Much of this information will depend upon the age of the individual when they first receive the diabetes diagnosis. The next important step is to meet with the family medical physician and discuss the best course of action to take. Adult diabetes is serious and the causes of diabetes are several. By making an appointment to discuss the best next step to take the mind worry will subside.

Individuals diagnosed with pre-diabetes will want to pay close attention to diet and exercise to prevent the diabetes becoming worse. One of the first things the individual and the medical physician will discuss is a new regimented diet plan. This will be a diabetes diet filled with fresh vegetables like carrots, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, and asparagus. Fresh vegetables are much better to add to the daily diet because they meet the daily requirements with the vitamins and minerals the body needs. Then there are the fresh fruits which for many provide a wonderful diabetic snack with a sweet taste. Fresh fruit also carries all the daily requirements of additional vitamins and minerals that the individual body requires.

Individuals adding healthy choices to add to the daily diet is to add whole grain bread instead of the traditional white bread. Whole grain bread is by itself much healthier to consume because white bread is with bleached flour which means additional chemicals the human body does not require. Another source of healthy food to add is the sweet potato because the sweet potato is a much healthier choice and offers fiber to the diet the way cabbage does. The benefits of a healthier lifestyle in the kitchen will also help the individual to lose a few pounds which is a beneficial move and lower the cholesterol all at the same time.

Depending upon the individual’s overall health, adding activities to the daily routine is another beneficial decision for a healthier lifestyle. If exercising was not on the radar before the diabetes information then it is a great time to begin now. Start by taking a short walk during the morning hours for about fifteen or twenty minutes and repeating the short walk in the early evening hours. When the weather turns cold or rainy investing in a treadmill is a wonderful alternative. If the individual enjoys spending time in the local parks then the individual can take a short ride to the local park, walk around, and observe the animal life. The ideal is for the individual to make the time to walk around outside and enjoy the fresh air as well as the view.
