Who would think sugar would have such an effect on a person’s body? Sweet and delightful, this little ingredient plumps up foods with tastiness and appeal. But like so many things, “too much of a good thing” is definitely not “a good thing.” Besides that, it can destroy those things which “do a body good.” So, apparently, sugar and the sugar level within a body may not be such good buddies, after all.
Basically, the body cannot exist without some sugar. A form of sugar feeds the cells of the body; glucose, also called blood sugar, is a product of the digestive system when food is ingested. This blood sugar travels throughout the body dispensing nutrients/food/energy to muscle cells, fat cells, and even brain cells. Actually, the body cannot function without this sugar. Moving in the bloodstream it becomes the very “life of the body, in that it keeps the body lively and well.
So here it goes, the blood sugar is pumping through the body and begins to have a little difficulty. Something is wrong. What has happened to the insulin? Insulin (produced by the pancreas) is the vehicle that transports this sugar nutrient through the blood into the body cells. Without it, the blood glucose cannot gain entry into the cells. The cells start clamoring for their food and if the sugar still cannot enter, the cells begin starving. In response, the pancreas tries to produce more insulin; the blood sugar increases to meet the furious demand. However, the pancreas cannot seem to produce the insulin. Somehow, it either has become not quite well, thus producing very small amounts of insulin; or, it has become very ill and no longer produces insulin, at all. In either case, there is no insulin to assist the sugar into the cells. Therefore, since the blood glucose still is not being used and it is still increasing, the sugar level begins to rise more and more.
Another big reason that the sugar is not having success entering the cells may be due to the cells themselves. Somehow, perhaps, they have decided to not let the insulin to open the “hatch” to allow the blood sugar into their tiny rooms. If this is the case, then, the body’s cells have developed something that is called “insulin resistance. No entrance; no feeding; no feeding; no sugar decrease; no sugar decrease then, more sugar level increase. This can grow into a very nasty condition.
One of the greatest threats to the body is that the body begins to harm itself. And, by the blood sugar levels increasing in the body, gradually the body develops some ugly complications. Abnormal sugar levels are developing and not leaving the scene, except through the kidneys into the urine. Something has to “give.” The body steadily tries to even up the sugar level, trying very hard, as a matter of fact, to feed the cells and to continue functioning. However, the extra effort is taking a very large toll on the body. Increasing sugar levels are beginning to damage the heart, the kidneys, the nerves; in fact, the price of too much sugar is becoming a poison.
This once benign, positive force is now causing distress as it gluts the bloodstream. The body begins to grow thirstier and thirstier; the brain begins to feel sluggish, unable to focus; the eyes begin to blur; the heart begins to have palpitations; the mouth goes dry; and the skin begins to itch unbearably. Will it ever end? If not, then the sugar level will continue to increase; the body will continue to suffer; and life will be quite unpleasant for body and cell.
