Type 1 diabetes although it can occur at any age was once referred to as juvenile due the number of children adolescents and young adults who were diagnosed with it. Some medical professionals called type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes for unlike type 2 it required insulin for treatment. Insulin, a hormone required by the body to move blood sugar (glucose) into body cells. The cells store the glucose and as necessary convert it to energy. In the pancreas, an organ found just behind the stomach, special body cells called beta cells produce the insulin.
In diabetes type 1 once a patient develops the disease, within a period of 5-10 years the cells (beta) in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin are destroyed. Without the beta cells the body has no way of producing insulin. Although the cause is not known it is believed that a viral or environmental trigger in genetically susceptible people could increase the risk of contacting type1 diabetes. White blood cells normally our body’s defense system attack the beta cells that produce the insulin.
