Diabetes is a serious disease that will change your life in one way or another. People who have diabetes mellitus have to think about their disease every single day. More than likely, a day will never go by that you don’t think about your diabetes. You think about your diet, you think about balancing your life with diabetes mellitus, so that your blood sugar levels may remain within normal limits. You might like to think of other things, but your blood sugar will always be one of the top things on your mind, because if your blood sugar levels are out of control the cells of your body can starve and die. It is possible that your heart and circulatory system could become impaired to the point to where your kidneys can no longer function. Diabetes is a disease that can be controlled, but often isn’t. The following tips will help you live your life without constant worry that something is going wrong with your body.

1. Skin integrityBeing a diabetic, you need to pay close attention to many more things than people who are not diabetic. You need to do a thorough check of your skin all over your body to look for cuts or scratches. You may not feel every cut and scratch due to a nerve condition, called diabetic neuropathy. By checking the condition of your skin on a regular basis, you can notice and treat cuts and scratches right away, while preventing serious infections to result through openings in the skin.

Diabetics, often, don’t heal in the same way as people without diabetes. The wounds you get may take weeks to heal, where it could just take a few days to heal with non-diabetics. It is important to especially check your lower legs, ankles and feet. Check your toes for ingrown toenails. Don’t try to cut out ingrown toenails yourself, because you could inadvertently cause an injury by doing so. If you should have a problem with your toenails see your health care professional to take care of it for you.

By eating a healthy diet and checking your blood glucose levels on a regular basis, you can keep better track of your diabetes mellitus. As a diabetic, you may not only have to deal with your blood glucose levels being elevated; you may also have to deal with low blood sugars. If your blood sugar levels are too low, you can go into hypoglycemic shock, sometimes called insulin shock. On the other hand, you run the risk of going into a coma with high blood sugars, so you need to keep your blood glucose levels in balance. Prolonged glucose levels out of control can damage your organ systems; therefore you should always have your diabetes on your mind, and live a healthy lifestyle.

One problem some diabetics have is trying to control their diabetes so strictly that they cause their own blood glucose imbalances. Being too strict can be just as bad as being too complacent. It is better to just try to live a healthy lifestyle, use common sense in your food choices and portion control, and take your medications as you should. If you are a type 2 diabetic you may have more leeway in controlling your blood glucose levels. If you have type 1 diabetes, you may have to have tighter control, if you happen to be what is known as a “brittle” diabetic. It is important to check your blood sugar levels 3 to 4 times a day for some people who are taking insulin for their diabetes mellitus. By testing your blood sugar levels, you can plan how you will eat to maintain normal or near normal levels. Be sure to track your blood sugar levels with your glucometer. Most glucose meters have a large memory, so you can track and report any seriously abnormal blood sugar levels to your physician.

You can live a happy and normal life as a diabetic. You do have to make permanent lifestyle changes to manage your diabetes, but you can live a normal life. You can still do all the things as a diabetic that you could do if you weren’t diabetic. You can still drive a car and do all the things you did when you weren’t diabetic, as long as you live a healthy lifestyle. Problems begin to arise when you start leaning toward an unhealthy lifestyle.
