Diabetes can be caused by a few different factors concerning your insulin production. You can become diabetic if you don’t produce enough insulin to carry glucose out of the blood and into the cells of your body, or you don’t produce any insulin at all or if your body is resistant to insulin. Diabetes type 1 is an autoimmune disorder, where the body attacks itself due to the immune system seeing antigens as allergens and the body’s immune system attacks the pancreas. If you are a man, you are slightly more likely to develop type 1 diabetes than women.

Most people have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than type 1. If you are overweight, obese, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol you may be more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, eat a diet with high fat intake, drink alcohol on a regular basis you may be setting yourself up to develop type 2 diabetes. It is believed that a poor diet sets off an assault of free radicals in your body that destroys the normal functioning of the body and causes imbalances that lead to illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and other disorders.

If you are a non-white American you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus than Caucasian Americans. Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and Latin Americans have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than Caucasian Americans.

If you are between the ages of 45 and 65 you have greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus than people of younger ages. It isn’t so much that age causes type 2 diabetes, but that many people in this age group do not take care of themselves properly. Many people after age 40 begin to live a fairly sedentary lifestyle, and they may not watch their diet as well.

Living a healthy lifestyle is important to prevent diabetes from ever becoming part of your life. Every year over 220 million people die with diseases and conditions related to diabetes. For instance, when you have diabetes, your kidneys may be attacked. Your heart may also be impacted. Many times a diabetic’s kidneys stop functioning due to a lack of nutrients and oxygen supplied by the circulatory system. People with diabetes type 2 are more likely to die of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.

An upside to learning that you are a type 2 diabetic is that you will likely live longer than someone who isn’t diabetic or doesn’t know they are diabetic. People who have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2 and type 1 tend to watch their diets better and increase their exercise. Diabetics generally live healthier lifestyles as part of their diabetic treatment. There is no diabetes cure, but many diabetics live without symptoms of diabetes because they made changes to their lifestyles in accordance to their diabetes treatment.
